Documentary Sales Lead - Life Story Films (part time, commission)

You Own Your Own Stories LLC

Documentary Company seeking Part Time, Remote Salesperson

Location: Remote

Hours: 20 (part-time)

Pay: Commission + Base training pay

Do you have a passion for film and aren’t afraid of sales?

You Own Your Own Stories LLC ( https://www.yoyos.ai/) is seeking a talented person with both sales and filmmaking experience for an exciting role.

The right person for this role will have past experience producing films, ideally documentaries. Fiction directors, producers, actors and other filmmakers are welcome to apply. This is a sales position that requires an outgoing, driven and creative attitude.

What its is: Life Stories Creative Lead

In this role you will reach out to individuals who would like to share their own life story, set up meetings to learn more about them and their goals, share our past work and sell them at a minimum $15,000 price point.

When deals are closed you will work with a producer who will hire a crew and complete the production. These are short film documentaries. But if you can sell a feature or longer film and gather the funds to do it (by charging the client accurately), all the better. In general the films we make are 10 minutes in length and are intended to go to film festivals, live on YouTube and be shared by the client (subject) on social media.

Here is a sample: Neeti's Story in Her Own Words- From Shimla to Seattle | Women in Tech Leaders. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5sivA-8-LE) This is a 10 minute documentary about the incredible journey Neeti made from the foothills of the Himalayas to managing one of the biggest tech partnerships in the world. 🏆 WINNER of two awards for BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT from international film festivals. 🏆

Job Duties:

  • Main Duty: Close Deals with new leads.
  • Take prospective clients through an established sales process including interview, story ideas pitch, proposal + scope and work agreement. You will create the work agreement and send invoices.
  • Coordinate with a producer to make sure the films get made
  • Once the deal is closed (signed agreement and first invoice paid), you will connect with a YOYOS producer who will manage production. You may end up being the Director, or you may not, depending on location and schedule.
  • Stay in touch with the project
  • Get on cadence calls occasionally, check in with the client and follow up through the film festival stage. This will include getting referrals for more leads.
  • Generate leads
  • You will have some marketing support to send leads, but most of the leads you close will be self-generated. You are expected to set up a minimum of 10 meeting a month from your own networking and outreach. This involves going to networking events, conferences and pitching.
  • Generate Referrals
  • Follow up with leads and people in your network to generate life story referrals. For example, “Who do you know in your circle that really needs their story told? Who have you always thought ‘wow, someone needs to make a film about this person’?”

Hours:

This is a part-time position. Ideally either mornings or afternoons of each week-day will be free to take calls with clients. There is an option to go full-time after a trial period.

Pay structure:

10% commission. You get 10% of the total deal size of every project you close. Commission is paid as each invoice comes in. This means, the bigger the average deal size, the more money you make.

The first 3 months you will get a $300/month training fee. After that, the amount you make depends on the checks that come in!

If you close 1 in 10 leads from the first call at an average deal size of $15,000, you can expect to make between $18,000-$54,000 a year working part time. If your deal size is $20k average, that range goes up to $24,000-$72,000.

There is no salary cap. You can make as much money as you want, if you are disciplined in your work.

Why this job is awesome:

  • Feel great about the work you are doing. These stories are not corporate ads, they are real life stories with no strings attached. These are helping people directly.
  • Unique and rewarding job. Your creativity, interview skills and passion are your basis for success.
  • Meet amazing interesting people, build your network
  • Build your portfolio as a filmmaker - if you choose to direct some of the projects you close, you can add award-winning short documentary films to your portfolio.
  • Freedom to work remotely
  • No micromanaging
  • We teach you how to run a successful, sustainable business in film

Some reasons this job will also probably suck:

  • We are a small company, so no major perks. We do give 2 weeks paid vacation. But no health insurance.
  • The first 3 months will be hell. You will have a small base pay duing this time as you get trained, but there will be times you don’t feel it’s working. If you can push through, you will make gobs of money.
  • Sales is really hard. You get rejected, it’s emotional. It’s not for the faint of heart.
  • Selling to individuals is not like selling to companies. It requires skill and effort. You have to practice your script, read sales books and get on lots of calls.
  • We don’t have everything perfectly figured out, so you will sometimes feel confused and will just have to push ahead.
