Jane Aaron shot her whimsical and wry animated films frame by frame with a 16mm Bolex camera. In her first film she used only simple handmade drawings, but in her began including both drawings and handmade elements with live action footage, a technique she continued in the work that followed. Interior Designs, 1980, takes the viewer through Aaron’s world, both real and imagined, from the intimacy of her home to the desert and mountains. Remains To Be Seen, 1983, features drawings ranging from two inches to over six feet, filmed in diverse outdoor locations and in interiors. Traveling Light, 1985, appears to be following a patch of sunlight that moves through a home until the illusion is revealed. In Set In Motion, objects and even people engaging in their daily routines, are moved across the “set,” in reality Aaron’s home. Familiar objects of domestic life take on a life of their own and appear to dance around the out of doors in This Time Around, 1989.

Jane Aaron, 1948-2015, has films in collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Hirshhorn Museum, and The Walker Art Center. Her films have been included in the Whitney Biennial, numerous film festivals around the world, and screened on PBS, Showtime, Cinemax, Nickelodeon, The Learning Channel and TV networks internationally. She has been a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow as well as a recipient of grants and fellowships from American Film Institute, Jerome Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, NYS Council on the Arts, Short Films Showcase, and Creative Artists Public Service; as well as a MacDowell Colony Fellow. An artist, author, illustrator, and teacher as well as an animator, she has collaborated with other filmmakers and made over 200 short animations for Sesame Street.
