Ava Duvernay and NYWIFT member LeVera Sutton at the premiere of Venus VS.
Excited About: Ava Duvernay’s Venus Vs. It premiered last night at the Paley Center. It is a knock out, to use the wrong sports metaphor. It will be the opening film of ESPN’s Nine for IX series and premieres on July 2. The nine films, celebrating the 40th anniversary of Title IX, are all directed by women. Title IX is the landmark legislation that outlawed gender discrimination at schools receiving federal funds and resulted in, among other things, a huge increase in funding of athletic activities for girls and women in schools and colleges.
Congratulations To: Tribeca Film Institute recipients. The Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund grant included three Spotlighting Women Documentary Awards, provided in conjunction with the Kering Foundation. Spotlighting Women Awards went to Democrazy, directed by Andreas Dalsgaard, Nicolas Servide & Viviana Gomez, Disruption, directed by Pamela Yates, and What Tomorrow Brings, directed & produced by Beth Murphy. Chris Hegedus and DA Pennebaker received a Gucci Grant for Unlocking The Cage.
I Am Impressed: With the work of Hollaback and their goal to end street harassment of women. Check out their new Bystander’s Guide. http://www.ihollaback.org/resources/get-involved/
