Join us for an after-work boardroom-style conversation among members of two of New York’s most powerful women’s organizations: 100 Women in Finance and New York Women in Film & Television.
In true power player fashion, women from these communities of entertainment and finance will come together to uncover strategies behind finding powerful films from female voices and securing the financing needed to bring these projects to the screen.
Finance Her is the first of a series of discussions designed to tap into the entertainment and finance industries of New York City, connecting professionals from both fields to ensure that financing options are available to women filmmakers. There is a need to address everyone’s role in the process when it comes to funding and packaging a film. By ensuring that both worlds are speaking the same language and finding parallels in project development, a much clearer path to investing in untold women’s stories is sure to follow.

Lisa Cortes: Academy Award® winning-Executive Producer and Producer’s credits are Precious, The Woodsman, Shadowboxer and the documentary The Apollo. In addition to producing, Cortes was also the Director of Imagine a Future and The Remix: Hip Hop X Fashion.
Mary Jane Skalski: Independent Spirit Award winning-Executive Producer and Producer’s credits are Pariah, Trick, The Station Agent, The Visitor, Mysterious Skin and the upcoming film Before you Know It. A former Senior Advisor to Gamechanger, a financing entity focused exclusively on films directed by women, Skalski is currently the President of Production for Echo Lake Entertainment, a production, management and financing company.
Candy Straight: Executive Producer of Equity, a film about a female senior investment banker in Wall Street threatened by a financial scandal.
Valerie Novakoff: The founder and managing director of the Broadway Women’s Fund, Broadway’s first impact investment fund. She is a commercial theater producer and manager of investor relations at Davenport Theatrical Enterprises, a Tony Award-winning producing office and Broadway’s first Inc. 5000 company, where she has overseen over $20 million in Broadway investments to date. She previously worked for 321 Theatrical Management (Wicked, Fun Home), Tony Award-winning producer Orin Wolf (The Band’s Visit), Tony Award-winning director Des McAnuff (Jersey Boys, Tommy), and The Drama League. Her studies on gender parity on Broadway have been referenced in Fast Company and The New York Times.
MP Dunleavey (Moderator): The senior finance editor at T Brand Studio, the creative agency of The New York Times. As a journalist, MP covered women and finance extensively. She was the founding editor-in-chief of DailyWorth.com and a former personal finance columnist with MSN.com and The New York Times. She lives in NYC with her family.
