Member Screening: November 2018

Join us for this month’s Member Screening showcasing Forgotten Bayou by Producer/Director Victoria Greene, and the short films Dirty Roses, 49 Years After – Above Limits, and 49 Years After – The Gifted by Director/Writer/Producer Petra Terzi. The filmmakers will be available for a Q&A immediately following the screening.

The screening series provides members with the opportunity to show their work in a theatrical setting. Screenings take place at Anthology Film Archives, followed by networking at a nearby bar.

Forgotten Bayou

On August 3, 2012 a sinkhole swallowed a swath of swamps in Bayou Corne, Louisiana. After a mandatory evacuation was ordered, residents were left with an impossible choice: start their lives over elsewhere, or stay and face the risks. Featuring interviews from current and former community members, industry employees, scientists and government officials, Forgotten Bayou chronicles the events leading up to the tragedy, as well as the continuing ways it has altered their lives. Located in an area with deep Cajun roots, Forgotten Bayou shows the impact of disaster, while also illustrating the beauty and culture of Southern Louisiana.

Victoria Greene, an award-winning filmmaker and a NYWIFT member,  had a successful marketing career before forming Greene Bayou Films in 2013. She has since produced the documentaries Forgotten Bayou and Monster on the Bayou. Continuing to produce and direct both documentary and narrative films that demonstrate hope, strength and resilience, she is currently in production of The Last Moss Man, which was recently awarded a New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation grant. Other affiliations include WIFT-Louisiana and New Orleans Film Society. Additionally Victoria is an advisory board member of The Cool Cooperative, an after school film program for underprivileged youth.

Dirty Roses is a humanitarian docudrama that deals with the power of the soul of disabled persons, individuals or families who came from the Arab world in Greece as wartime, economic or political refugees. Two extreme marginalized groups with the most helpless victims, the one from countries of the third world with racial and ethnic minorities, and the second one is often socially degraded. Their commonality is their hope, their love to dream and their struggle to live in freedom, the triptych of the motto “that which does not kill us makes us stronger”!

An exciting story celebrates the diversity among us and the friendships we create that overcome our limits. Central Park in New York, January 2000. Sophia, a Holistic Therapist, is helping Annie, a clairvoyant girl cope with her abilities, which stir up deep rooted memories of Sophia’s childhood in Greece that deal with similar paranormal issues. Based on a true story.

Petra Terzi established the Cultural International Festivals (2003). She founded the Cyprus International Film Festival (2006) and Bridges in Greece (2008), promoting gender equality in film. Petra’s films (2016-2017) have been selected in over 50 Festivals. She received awards and been a finalist in over 15 Film Festivals. She co-wrote 49 Years After. She directed the documentary Roses Trilogy about refugees and the disabled. Her first feature film, Emergence, a medical ethical drama, is in pre-production. She is a partner in Papyrus Trinity Star, a jurist at Jaipur International Film Festival, a member of NYWIFT and founder of CyprusWIFT (2018).

Thalia Alexiou was born in Greece where she studied home economics and theatre. Thalia moved to the United States 47 years ago. Following graduation in acting at Wilkes University, she studied and practiced holistic medicine for 40+ years. Since childhood, Thalia’s passion was to value cultural differences and the equality of humanity. She is the author of three books: Gratitude=Increase, The Three Dreams and 49 Years After, which became also a script,  based on her life as a clairvoyant. She is a founding partner of the film production company, Papyrus Trinity Star, LLC, with a goal to produce human enlightenment cinema.

Patience ‘Ovo Okhuofu is a Nigerian American. She studied Theatre Arts with an emphasis on Directing at the University of Benin, Nigeria and transferred to Montclair State University in New Jersey, where she graduated with a BFA in Theatre Arts with a concentration in Production Design. Upon graduation, she enlisted in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged from the Army after eight years of service. Patience went back to school to study Fashion Design at the Arts Institute of New York as well as Filmmaking and Cinematography at the New York Film Academy. Patience has several short films under her belt and she is the Founder / CEO of Patovo LLC. Patience is married to Daniel Okhuofu and they are blessed with two adorable children, Emike and Oshioke.
