Terry’s Picks: Deadline Extended, Diversity Matters, Broadway Exclusion

Deadline Extended: We have extended the deadline for submissions to The Writers Lab this year. Women over 40, you now have until 11:59 PM EST on March 5th to send us your scripts!

Diversity Matters: As hoped, Marvel’s Black Panther had a wildly successful opening weekend – proof that gender and racial diversity can and will lead to box office success. The data has pointed that way for a while but I am glad to see the studios finally catching up. A recent study by McKinsey & Company shows that companies with more diverse workforces perform better financially. In fact, companies in the top 25% for racial and ethnic diversity are 35% more likely to have financial returns above their respective national industry medians.

Broadway Exclusion: Broadway could learn a few things from Black Panther. A new study from Broadway producer Ken Davenport underscores the reach of theatre’s gender disparity. Over the last five years, only 28% of commercial Broadway plays or musicals had women lead producers.
