NYWIFT, SAG-AFTRA, School of Visual Arts Film department, WAM, and HerFlix are presenting a free screening of the documentary Girl Rising at the SVA Theater, in recognition of SWAN (Support Women Artists Now) Day, an annual event on the last Saturday of March that celebrates women artists.
After the screening, stay for a conversation with Tara Abrahams (10x10 Deputy Director) and Kayce Freed Jennings (Senior Producer, 10x10, and EVP, DocGroup).
From Oscar-nominated director Richard E. Robbins, the film spotlights the stories of unforgettable girls born into unforgiving circumstances. It captures their dreams, their voices, and their remarkable lives. Meryl Streep, Kerry Washington, Priyanka Chopra, Selena Gomez, Anne Hathaway, Alicia Keys, and other celebrated actors contribute voice performances to the film. By sharing their personal journeys, the girls of Girl Rising become our teachers.
Girl Rising is at the center of 10×10, a social action campaign that uses the power of storytelling and the leverage of strategic partnerships to deliver a single message: Educating girls in developing nations will change the world.
Tara Abrahams, Deputy Director, 10x10 team, served as director of the Maverick Capital Foundation. She began her career in the nonprofit sector as the founding New York director of Health Leads. She has served as a consultant for The Bridgespan Group, a nonprofit strategy consulting firm, and as a managing director at Acelero Learning, a company that works with Head Start programs.
Kayce Freed Jennings, Senior Producer, 10x10, and Executive Vice President, DocGroup, was a producer at ABC News for 20 years, and was on the staffs of Nightline, World News Tonight and 20/20. She works closely with nonprofits, including Teach for America and Concern Worldwide, and serves on the boards of Women in Need, and The Peter Jennings Project for Journalists and the Constitution.
Maaza Mengiste is a novelist who possesses a deep pride in her homeland, with its rich and complicated history. She writes with empathy for her characters as well as an understanding of the complex forces that shape their world. Mengiste was pleased to have an opportunity to write for GIrl Rising about Ethiopian girls living on the margins, and 10x10 is elated to add the talents of this Fulbright Scholar and accomplished author to its efforts.
