Part II - Above the Line & Below the Line
Media has helped to pave the way for social innovation and success, yet access to it may still be determined by unearned characteristics. Hiring, advancement and the perception of an individual's abilities are often pre-defined by race and gender. How do we address privilege and denial in today's industry, as well as social progress and accountability?
Award-winning creative editor Karama Brown brings over 12 years of experience in post-production with her into the editing suite. Her most recent commercial work includes spots for United States Marine Corps, JCPenney, PNC Bank and Ford. Her extensive body of work includes commercials for L'Oreal, Revlon, Herbal Essences, Nissan, Spiegel, ESPN and HBO. She began her career in commercial post-production as an online assistant at Chicago's Optimus. Karama received her BS Degree in Radio/TV/Film at Northwestern University and currently represented for commercials through Fluid, NY
Lillian Jiménez has worked as a producer, media arts center manager, media activist, exhibitor, funder and educator for nearly 30 years. A co-founder of the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP), she was the first recipient of its Life Achievement Award for Activism. She has produced What Could You Do With A Nickel? and won an Emmy for editing SisterSong, about women of color working in the reproductive health movement.
She is currently in post production on a doc about the struggle for educational and language civil rights in the Puerto Rican community. Jiménez also works with arts organizations on strategic long-term planning.
Laure Parsons is the Director of Home Media Sales & Marketing at Zeitgeist Films. She is a media professional with several years of experience in distribution and runs the Web site infinicine.com. Parsons has a background in documentary production, writing and fund development and has worked with a number of organizations including NYWIFT, the Tribeca Film Festival, the Vancouver International Film Festival and Women in Film and Video Vancouver.
JT Takagi is a sound recordist and producer whose films focus on Asian American, immigrant and Korean peninsular issues. She has directed and produced documentaries at Third World Newsreel (TWN) including Homes Apart: Korea, Bittersweet Survival, The Women Outside, The #7 Train and North Korea: Beyond the DMZ, which all aired on PBS. She recorded sound for the We Shall Remain series, Matters of Race, The Blues, Africans in America, as well as the upcoming Freedom Riders for American Experience. She teaches at CUNY, SVA and Third World Newsreel, where she is also the business manager. Takagi has been nominated for two Emmy awards.
Ela Thier (pictured above) recently wrote, directed and produced her feature debut, Foreign Letters, currently in post-production. By writing an honest account of her struggles as a female director, Thier galvanized the support of over 250 individuals and organizations, bringing the project to fruition. A prolific writer, her feature scripts were selected by the Independent Film Week (formerly IFP Market) four consecutive years. Her writing has earned option offers, commissioned assignments and numerous recognitions, including a 2008 NYFA fellowship in screenwriting. In the past five years, Thier has attracted hundreds to her screenwriting workshops, becoming known for her unique approach to training writers.
Robin Davis-Moore (moderator) is an entrepreneur, educator and producer whose first foray into the media industry was a short story commissioned for the Emergent Reader Book Series by Scholastic, Inc. She has worked with such media companies as Disney, Cablevision and WGBH, while honing her skills as a business analyst for film and media for Lions Gate. She has a background in new media, film, television and finance, and was awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year Award for filmmaking by the HPEDC.
