The Power Player Breakfast Series brings women at the top of their career game to NYWIFT for intimate, inspiring discussions on their current projects, working their ways to the top and other exciting industry insights! For May, we welcome Marjorie Kaplan, Group President, of three Discovery Communications channels: TLC, Animal Planet & Velocity.
Kaplan’s talk will touch upon the experiences, opportunities and challenges she encountered along her career path. Attendees will pick up on the personal philosophies and lessons that helped shape her leadership style. Her tenure at Discovery began in the 1990s, when she was focused on its children’s programming, including the Discovery Kids brand. The networks under Kaplan’s purview have benefitted not only from her considerable talents as a programmer, but also her marketing expertise.
Marjorie Kaplan has been leading the charge at Discovery Communications channels since 1996. She attained her present role as group president of TLC, Animal Planet and Velocity last year.
Kaplan took over leadership of Animal Planet in 2007. She was named president of Velocity in 2012 and became president of TLC in 2014. Under her leadership, TLC achieved its highest ratings in primetime in more than a decade. In addition, Kaplan launched a new tagline and brand campaign, "Everyone needs a little TLC," which helped the network finish 2014 as a top 10 primetime cable network with all key women demos.
Kaplan also transformed Animal Planet into a more adult-focused, competitive entertainment brand, with a new logo, new brand campaign and the tagline “Surprisingly Human.” Last year, Animal Planet ranked as a top-20 cable network in the men 25-54 demographic for the third consecutive year. Under her purview Velocity has become a top-50 network in the same demo.
For over a decade, Kaplan directed children's programming for Discovery Networks, U.S., including all Discovery Kids Channel shows as well as the three-hour commercial free “Ready, Set, Learn” pre-school block televised on TLC and the Discovery Kids Channel. In 2006, she led Discovery Kids Channel to 14 daytime Emmy nominations.
Earlier, Kaplan was director of advertising for Kraft General Foods where she was responsible for brand strategy, positioning and advertising. Additionally, Kaplan was a vice president at Ogilvy & Mather, with clients including General Foods, AT&T and TWA.
