Free Screening: PLANETA KIRSAN on Friday, 7:30 pm at indieScreen
NYWIFT will co-present a special screening of the documentary
Planeta Kirsan
by Polish director Magdalena Pieta on Friday, Dec. 14, 7:30 pm, at indieScreen (289 Kent Ave. at 2nd St., Williamsburg).
The film is part of a monthly series of films by the New Generation of Polish Filmmakers, led by NYWIFT member Agata Drogowska in partnership with Eureka Media and Munk Studio, which focuses on Polish directorial debut films. Last month, NYWIFT co-sponsored New Generation’s inaugural film series, which featured the award-winning

y, directed by Maria Sadowska.
Planeta Kirsan
is a 50-minute documentary about a city’s obsession with the game of chess in the Republic of Kalmykia, one of the smallest and poorest republics in the Russian Federation. Chess City was built by Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the first and only President of Kalmykia. There, a boy named Alekhan and his brother Amir dream of becoming World Chess Champions. The film documents their road to make their dreams come true at a major chess competition.

Three for the Taking
(9 pm) is award-winning 30-minute film about a 16-year-old girl who is forced to take care of her two siblings after her mother is diagnosed with a deadly disease. It was directed by Bartosz Konopka, whose film Rabbit a la Berlin received an Academy Award nomination.

Simple Desires
(9:30 pm) is an emotionally charged tale of an artistic woman and her family, which is fracturing under the strain of life’s disappointments. The 85-minute film was directed by Marek Stacharski.
