Shades of Disappointment
by Hanadi Sadi
Afaf is taken into the scenes and her mind travels back:
INT. YOUNG AFAF’S HOME - AFAF’S BEDROOM - DAY
Oblivious to her mother’s approaching figure standing by her side, YOUNG AFAF (15), is reading a romantic “ABEER NOVELS” book in Arabic, hiding it in her textbook, with a dreamy smile on her face while she’s lying in her bed that’s furnished with different cute stuffed animals. Afaf’s Mother EBTISAM(33), snatches the book angrily startling Young Afaf.
Is this your “studying”?
How did you find this?
I told you stay away from my old stuff!
Mama, please, just let me finish the end. I need to know what happens to her.
Ebtisam holds the book in Young afaf’s face.
This is a sleeping pill; it gives you nice dreams, and it’s addictive, Afaf. But sooner or later you’ll have to wake up and face the ugly reality that you can never ever be free to fall in love and marry your lover like the girls in these books do. Remember it’s translated from another language, another world, way different from ours. Dreams will get you nowhere; they’ll only make reality harder for you to face.
Afaf's Mother takes the book and leaves.
I’m doing you a favor, Afaf.
Young Afaf’s frustrated, sad face fades gradually in black.
